At a time when farmers’ markets are bursting with produce, it’s kind of astonishing to hear about the phenomenon of “food deserts” in certain neighborhoods around the city. Though the drugstore is not often thought of as the first place for fresh food, Walgreens was spurred to action by Mayor Daley, and has started offering fresh produce in two stores in needed areas, with eight more locations to follow. Items include onions, potatoes and peppers, along with some fruit and frozen meat. Walgreens is based in nearby Deerfield, and the company is investigating whether to expand the produce options in other stores around the country. [Sun-Times via Huff Post]
