Marketing Gimmicks

Honest Tea Tests Chicago’s Honor

It was a test fellow Chicagoans, and we didn’t do so well. Honest Tea decided to do a little marketing gimmick and set up a corner stand with their product on Michigan Avenue. Signs explained to people that they should slip a dollar into a plastic box on the “honor system.” Thing is, the company filmed the whole thing, and kept tabs on how many people gave the dollar, and how many just walked away with a free drink. The result was not particularly good. Only 78 percent were honest, which was way below Atlanta and Boston. But we cry foul. The stand was placed by the Watertower on Michigan Avenue, which might be location in the city with the least number of actual Chicagoans. That’s like finding a representative sample of New Yorkers by going to Time Square. Had the stand been placed in the heart of the business district in the Loop we believe our city would have fared better. At least, we’d like to believe so. Check out the video on Youtube below and decide for yourself. [NBC Chicago]
