Closings

Hollywood Losing a Classic Sunset Haunt

Just as we were gearing up to make fun of Guest of a Guest’s list of Hollywood dives that would eschew the sublimely gully Spotlight for lively, fun Tiki Ti, Eater hits us with the news that Sunset’s classic dive Ye Coach and Horses will close after 75 years due to raised rents. Considering the recent success of Waterloo & City, this might have been the perfect moment for an Anglophile renaissance at Coach. For many, this was a perfect Hollywood hole, with its Indian food take-out option next door, loud music, dark nooks, and a non-ironic head-banging mentality. Even your narrator getting his nose broken in the doorway didn’t keep us from coming back to drink in the spirit of Richard Burton, once a regular here, as were Hitchcock and Tarantino as well. The bar will be closed by the end of the month, but we’ll always have the memories…and facial laceration scars to keep it in our hearts.
