Coming Up in Adversarial Gluttony: Strawberry Shortcake and Oyster Shucking

Few things epitomize early summer as much as strawberry shortcake and freshly shucked oysters. Not together, though — that would be gross. So it’s a good thing that the Greenpoint/McCarren Park Greenmarket’s hands-free strawberry-shortcake-eating competition and the NYC Food Film Festival’s Great New York City Shuck ‘N Suck have a few days between them for your stomach to settle. The shortcake eat-a-thon is this Saturday at 11 a.m. (prizes go to the messiest and cleanest eaters as well as the fastest, so maybe you’ve got a shot at glory; it’s free to enter). Line up to watch the competitive oyster shucking on Wednesday, June 23, at 8 p.m. at Water Taxi Beach (it follows all-you-can-eat oysters and a movie screening that start at 7; admission is $95 in advance or $125 at the door).
