Patti U. Braves the Student Cuisine at Bistro 10UN; Bauer Doesn’t So Much Care for Lafitte

Patricia Unterman departs from her usual rave-only format (she has noted before that she’d rather write no review than a negative review) to offer a bit of constructive criticism for the culinary student cuisine at Bistro 10UN. She writes that “consistency varies from visit to visit, even on the same dish,” but that this is typical of student-run restaurants. We question whether one should even be reviewing a student-run, two-day-a-week restaurant given that it’s basically always a practice run, but anyway, thanks Patti. [Examiner]

Michael Bauer writes that Russell Jackson’s improvisational, daily changing menu at Lafitte leads to some “pretty interesting, sometimes strange, combinations [that] aren’t always successful but they’re guaranteed conversation starters.” He makes no mention of the excellent cocktail program; notes some undercooked rabbit and slimy sous vide chicken; really only seems to have liked a single stone fruit salad dish; and following a disastrous English pea panna cotta he has only a few kind words for the pastry chef. Overall: one and a half stars. [Chron]
