Avid Chowhounder and rumored Michelin inspector Robert Lauriston’s upcoming Berkeley venture, Locanda de Eva, in the former Maritime East/Mazzini space (2826 Telegraph), is due in July. We caught wind of the project in February, and now Eater is reporting that he’s made some new hires. The previously reported chef Alex Placencia (Miss Pearl’s Jam House, Specchio) has been replaced by Huw Thornton (SPQR), who will also be made partner.
Matt Derrick, opening manager at Terzo, Pesce and Miss Pearl’s Jam House, is also on the team as partner and GM, and Jackie Patterson is doing the cocktail list.
We do have to wonder: Could someone possibly find the time both to traverse the Bay Area inspecting restaurants for Michelin and open a restaurant? Perhaps not.
