What to Eat at The Taco Shop at Las Palmas

Photo: Las Palmas

These days we imagine that just about every restaurant development meeting involves some smooth-talker espousing the “hotness” of street food, food trucks, short ribs, and tacos. What else explains the rebirth of a Hollywood nightclub that now comes with its own adjacent taco stand?

H.wood Group just brought Las Palmas Restaurant and Lounge back from the dead, having been closed in 2003 to make room for LAX. Hoping to compete with the success of the bacon-wrapped hot dog slingers loitering outside of most clubs, Las Palmas opened The Taco Shop, a tiny, tiled corner counter grilling a la carte Mexican food and yup, hot dogs! The stand stays open until 3 A.M. and features the same famous triumvirate of asada, carnitas, and pollo that you’d find from a truck, only with the addition of the now ubiquitous short rib taco. There are also some veggie and vegan options, which we’re guessing comes without the usual panic that greets us when ordering anything meatless, let alone pointedly vegetarian, at a typical Mexican food stand.

Inside, Las Palmas’ main menu embraces casual Mexican eats like sopes and flautas (both available with short rib), and entrees like chicken mole and hand-pounded ribeye bistec. Take a look at the menus for both Las Palmas restaurant and The Taco Shop at Las Palmas below and please let us know what you think if you get a bite yourself.
