Tony Mantuano held a Top Chef Masters viewing party last night at Terzo Piano, using the occasion also as a fundraiser for his charity, Feeding America. Bags of flavored popcorn were available, along with a selection of desserts, and wines picked out by his wife Cathy Mantuano. The video feed went haywire for the first half of the show, but the unflappable Mantuano stepped up to the front and began a play by play of all of the events. He didn’t even break a sweat.
As you probably already saw, Mantauano made it to the next round on the back of his ouzo shrimp and his au gratin potatoes—the latter recipe was revealed to be his mothers. Although his pasta was considered over done by the judges, he claims that every other chef thought it was perfectly al dente.
But that’s about as racy as things got. Though Rick Bayless mentioned some intense fighting during the finals, Mantuano took the high road on all accounts, “I love them all.” Asked what ingredient he would most have wanted to use in the program he said, ” “A sous chef. I had to peel all those shrimp by myself.”
Plus, the number of Obama references during the entire night: zero!
