Picante Falls Victim to Credit Card Scam

Popular, 16-year-old Berkeley Mexican restaurant Picante fell victim recently to a worldwide credit card fraud scam in which online thieves hacked into the in-house computer system and stole 50 encrypted card numbers which were duplicated on cards around the world. As ABC 7 reports, Picante then got a visit from the Secret Service, who’s been tracking similar frauds at businesses around the country.

The restaurant has since had to upgrade its systems to the tune of $20,000, and owner Jim Maser remains confused about how it all happened. “I’m a guy who makes tacos,” he says, “So this is a little bit over my head.”
