Tony award winner Judy Kaye, best known for her turn as Carlotta in Phantom of the Opera will star as Julia Child in a revival of Bon Appétit! at Boston University’s Tsai Center in July, Playbill reports. The show is a musical adaptation of an episode of The French Chef, in which our heroine makes Gâteau Au Chocolat, a classic French chocolate cake.
The musical “offers no ironic commentary on Miss Child, who might be a suitable subject for satire,” sniffed New York Times theater critic Mel Gussow in his tepid review of the original 1991 production. Nonetheless, the idea of someone singing in Julia Child’s voice is a hoot and we’d love to see a list of the musical’s songs (we’re imagining selections like “Butter, Butter, Butter (You Can Never Have Too Much),” “Beating the Egg Whites, Waiting for Soft Peaks,” and “Icing!”).
Bon Appétit! will run from July 28-August 1. Tickets are available through the Boston Midsummer Opera.
