We’re not sure if this is another Earth Day story or simply an economics issue, but Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co, the iconic Chicago gum producer, announced today that they’ll be replacing their distinctive aluminum gum wrapper with a paper one. The company has used aluminum for over 100 years, but will phase it out of five of their biggest brands. Paper will cost “13 percent less than foil,” according to the Sun Times, and will save “about 850 tons of aluminum.” The all important “freshness” of the gum is supposed to remain the same.
