Martin Cate, proprietor of SF’s favorite new Tiki bar, Smuggler’s Cove, invites all “concerned San Franciscans, Tiki freaks, Dionysians and Sybarites, midcentury fans, and rum aficionados” to come rally around the cause of saving SF’s favorite old Tiki bar, The Tonga Room, whose future remains in peril. Preservationists Chris VerPlanck and Erica Schultz will provide some updates about the status of the famed “hurricane lounge,” and tell everyone how they can help get the place declared a historic interior. The event happens on March 23rd, 5 p.m., at Smuggler’s Cove, 650 Gough Street. Shouldn’t we be rallying at the Tonga Room, though?
