Chef Daniel Scherotter, of popular Italian eatery/FiDi happy hour spot Palio D’Asti, is one of our city’s more vocal opponents of the street food revolution. Though he tells ABC 7 that the food you can get off carts and trucks may be “interesting,” as a restaurant owner he’s kinda bitter that Kung Fu Tacos parks across the street from him every day, offering their three-dollar duck tacos while he’s in his kitchen slaving away to cover his downtown rent, insurance, payroll taxes, the highest minimum wage in the country, etc.
In their defense, Kung Fu Tacos insists that they’re fully permitted, which isn’t the case for some street food vendors — and that’s the whole reason Supervisor Bevan Dufty called a committee hearing yesterday to discuss the matter of how to make street food regulation easier and clearer for startup vendors, many of whom don’t even know which city departments they need to get permits from.
