Each year since 1993 the Chron’s food staff compiles a list of five Rising Star Chefs around the Bay Area, many of whom go on to be *big stars* of the food-o-sphere, here and elsewhere. This year’s list, as Michael Bauer hinted a few weeks back, is a sausage fest, with five men who edged out any potential female contenders. “Try as we did to diversify the pool,” Bauer writes, “these guys kept rising to the top.” (Despite being one of the best reviewed chefs of the last year, Melissa Perello of Frances already won the honor way back in 2002.) Below, the latest crop of men who could be kings of the SF food scene.
John Paul Carmona, chef de cuisine at Manresa
Perry Hoffman, executive chef at Étoile at Domaine Chandon
Timothy Hollingsworth, chef de cuisine at The French Laundry
Charlie Kleinman, executive chef at Wexler’s
Joshua Skenes, chef at Saison
