Five is now the magic number over at Checker’s and BLT Steak. Both restaurants are rolling out new afternoon menus to lure in those who are about to go home when the whistle blows. BLT exec chef Brian Moyers’ “Five at Five” is a nightly affair debuting Monday with a new menu of dishes plus cocktails, wine, and beer, all available for five bucks from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Gruyere mac and cheese, steak sliders, braised lamb cheeks, and crispy Fanny Bays with yuzu aoili are promised. Reservations at 310-360-1950. So, what’s at Checker’s?

Downtown, chef Todd Allison is also trying to get more traffic with two new “rush hour” prix-fixe menus, hoping his braised short-rib potpie, rock shrimp & saffron risotto, and candy-striped baby beet salad beat sitting on the 110 for a big chunk of your evening. Checker’s is offering both three and five-course menus, at $39 and $70, respectively, though the three-course only goes from 5:00 to 6:30 P.M. and the five-course until 9:00 P.M. Reservations at 213-624-0000.
