Warm, Wonderful, Delicious Pie. With a Conscience!

The nonprofit anti-hunger group First Slice does lots of great things, feeding hundreds of Chicago’s homeless and hungry children and adults, but opening the First Slice Pie Cafe (163 E. Pearson, in the Water Works Visitor Center, 312 202 1227) last month, as the Sun-Times reports, might be the best thing yet. Run by North Pond vet Mary Ellen Diaz, the proceeds go towards creating a job training program, but honestly we’re more into the fact that the cafe sells eight flavors of pie daily, for $3 a slice. The place has been hugely popular with tourists — and given the similarly wild success of Uke Village’s Hoosier Mama Pie Company, we’ve got fingers crossed that pie takes over — cupcakes? whoopie pies? creme puffs? bah! — as the next hot dessert.
