Bauer Weighs in on Waiters Who Don’t Write Things Down

Today, in what’s become Pet Peeve Week over at his Between Meals blog, Michael Bauer responds to a reader who complains about the trend of servers at non-high-end restaurants who attempt to memorize a table’s orders, only to eff them up. “I’ve noticed this trend too,” writes Bauer, perhaps a little suggestibly, “and most times there is an error with the order.” [Italics ours.] Bauer goes on to presume this is usually the fault of the over-ambitious, personal style of the server, and not a mandate of the restaurant itself. But honestly, has anyone else noticed this epidemic of forgetful servers without pens? And of the ones we can recall who recently took our orders aurally, we don’t remember any mistakes. But then again, we don’t make a lot of tedious sauce-on-the-side and no-butter-please requests.
