All those years keeping kids from fast-food have apparently backfired as USA Today reports that the meat used in school lunches is inferior to that used at quick-service chains like McDonald’s. KFC and Campbell’s Soup won’t even buy the same past-its-prime poultry, referred to as “spent hens,” purchased by the USDA for public school lunches. McDonald’s and Burger King “test the ground beef they buy five to 10 times more often than the USDA,” while Jack-in-the-Box and others have ten times the limit for permitted bacteria in ground beef. Meat purchased by the USDA feeds 31 million students a day.
