Smuggler’s Cove Sets Opening Date

Perhaps the fall’s most closely watched bar opening, Smuggler’s Cove finally has a date: Martin Cate plans to throw open the doors of the former Jade Bar space on Dec. 8. It’s been a busy summer for Cate, who drummed up interest in his new project by challenging the internet to a treasure hunt for the location. The former Forbidden Island manager has been traveling all over the place seeking out small-time rum manufacturers to stock what will be the city’s first rum bar. In June we caught him on his way to Guatemala where he was checking out a tiny producer in the mountains. Lately, though, he’s been spending all his time at 650 Gough St. working on the space. “I never actually go to sleep anymore” he told Grub Street over the weekend. In his last public gig before the opening, Cate will make a guest appearance behind the bar at Jardiniere tonight for their tiki themed prix-fixe dinner. Hopefully he’ll get a nap in at some point, too.
