Oooh but we get a little shiver of excitement whenever we learn about a new secret menu. Bonus points if it’s only available at certain times, double bonus points if it’s in a language we don’t know how to read. Over at the Reader, the intrepid Mike Sula stumbles upon the jackpot: a late-night menu at Ravenswood’s Me Dee Cafe that focuses on congee (a.k.a. savory rice porridge) and is written in Thai. With an assist from translator Leela, Sula offers the menu in English — diners can deck out their congee with an assortment of toppings like dried sweet pickled turnips stir-fried with eggs, or deep-fried seasoned dried pork.
