Original Joe’s Fired Up Over Perceived Knock-Off

The fire-damaged Original Joe’s is still trying to come back to life, but in the meantime some of its former employees are planning a new restaurant with a familiar-sounding name, a move that rankles Joe’s owners. Scoop reports today that John Duggan is “not comfortable” with the planned Uptown Joe’s, slated for the former Cafe Majestic space at 1550 Sutter St. “We think it’s an infringement on our name and the goodwill we’ve built over the last 70 years,” he told the Chronicle.

Duggan intends to challenge the name, which precedent suggests may yield success — In the last year, 5A5 Steak Lounge and Metro Cafe have been rechristened after their original names came too close to existing businesses. Meanwhile, despite a rumor floated on Chowhound that Original Joe’s will reopen around Christmas, Duggan wouldn’t confirm a date or even an estimated reopening schedule to Grub Street.
