Blue Bottle Opens in Oakland

Oakland, your day has come. Blue Bottle is finally selling coffee in the 510. They’ve had a roasting plant out in Emeryville for a few years, but today marks the official opening of their new roasting facility with attached cafe in downtown Oakland. They’ll do all those wonderful coffees and food like in the San Francisco cafe, but a new food aspect is en route: Sandwiches made on a book press. SFoodie reported that the cafe is working on sandwiches made in the normal way (ingredients stuck between two pieces of bread) then compressed on a 50-pound book press. “”It becomes like this mono-textured sandwich that’s like astronaut food or something,” Blue Bottle owner James Freeman told SFoodie. For now, though, the Jack London Square-adjacent opening is sticking to regular coffees and cafe fare. Which is plenty for Oakland to get excited about.
