Our day was made upon hearing that Cafe Habana is coming to our coast from New York this winter with an expanded menu. Eater L.A. showed us a few pictures of the proposed Malibu location and we confirmed via Habana’s website (as getting a live person on the phone at this crushed-to-capacity diner is difficult) that a Cafe Habana Outpost is planned in Venice as well. L.A. is home to a few scattered and sometimes brilliant island-influenced eateries, but Habana has blown us away in the past with their Pan-Caribbean menus, grilled Mexican corn, and chicken diablo. Habana’s Lower Manhattan nook is a virtual fashion-spread of Bohemian looks, making it perfect for Venice. But we question whether low-key and isolated Malibu is a good fit for such a jumping spot, with its legions of famous families in search of solitude. Or maybe this is just the ultimate reason to be envious of Malibu’s good fortune.
