What’s on the Chef’s Tasting Menu at Marigold Kitchen?

Marigold Kitchen, the long-running West Philly BYOB, reopens tonight under new ownership with a new chef, Robert Halpern. The menu, which incorporates Halpern’s “classic French and postmodern experience” includes “outstanding late summer ingredients, imaginative preparations and an element of surprise.” In addition to the a la carte menu, where entrees run from $18 to $28, Halpern is offering a chef’s tasting menu for $85. We have a peek at the ten-course September chef’s tasting and while it’s not especially descriptive, it certainly is intriguing. A salad of liquid, gas and ice?

September Chef’s Tasting

• Salad of liquid, gas and ice

• Curried buttermilk cucumber bisque

• Deconstructed pina colada

• Slow braised pork belly

• Scallop puffs

• Grouper on short rib hash

• Thai beef jerky

• “Pork, beans and beer”

• Flight of popcorn

• Cookies and shake

Photos of some of these items, including the mysterious flight of popcorn, can be scrutinized on Marigold’s web site. The chef’s tasting takes roughly two hours and, at this time, there’s no need to request it in advance.
