Monk's Cafe

Tragedy Strikes Monk’s; Closed Until Further Notice

The building that houses Belgian beer haven Monk’s was the scene of a terrible accident in the wee hours of Sunday morning, when a man and woman fell four stories after the fire escape they were standing on detached from the building, killing the man and leaving the woman hospitalized in critical condition, reports the Daily News.

L&I; has evacuated all of the building’s residents, including Monk’s, after discovering various code violations. Monk’s owner Tom Peters, who does not own the building, sent a statement to Liquid Diet, expressing his sorrow and saying he may be open by today or Tuesday; the Daily News quotes an L&I; officer as saying that’s unlikely. This is the latest in a series of major building exterior issues - earlier this summer, a portion of the facade above the former Brasserie Perrier crashed to the ground and just last week, the same thing happened on 11th and Chestnut.
