Amidst the flood of submissions in our Share Our Strength/Taste of the Nation ticket giveaway, one stood out for its perfect encapsulation of all things awesome: children’s literature, hero worship, and a high-low culinary reimagining that wouldn’t be out of place on the menus of some of the city’s fancier restaurants. The winning hundred words about a favorite childhood food, from Joan:
This sounds ridiculous, but i loved the book Heidi when I was a kid. And I tried to emulate Heidi’s way of toasting bread and cheese over a fireplace, by putting Velveeta on a large tablespoon and melting it over the toaster heat, while toasting bread. When the bread popped up, i’d spoon the gooey cheese on it and eat it.
Joan wins VIP passes for two to attend Thursday’s event. Congrats are also due to Traci, who was randomly selected out of all entrants to win two General Admission passes. Kudos to all entrants, whose stories of frito sandwiches, brain-sucking, Petrus-poached pears, and humble peanut butter all made us laugh, sigh, or groan. Even if you didn’t win, you should still go to Taste of the Nation Chicago! Buy tickets here, and use the code GD09 for $25 off each ticket.
