Another Blow to South 3rd Street: Gayle to Close

Daniel Stern, who is scheduled to open two new restaurants this fall, announced today that he is closing Gayle, his first restaurant, on Friday, September 4 after five years of operation. This confirms closing rumors we’ve heard for months following his decision to switch the restaurant from a licensed operation to a BYOB. The official explanation is that Stern decided not to renew the lease on the tiny storefront, but with the recent closing of neighbor Ansill, it appears that the area is having a hard time sustaining its acclaimed restaurants. Stern’s new projects, MidAtlantic in West Philly and R2L at the top of Liberty Two are still full steam ahead and scheduled for September and November openings, respectively.
