While protests against restaurants serving foie gras have become almost passe, we were a little surprised to realize today that we haven’t heard much at all from the local animal-rights folks about the live chickens sold at the city’s farmer’s markets. The reminder came in the form of an online petition being circulated on the website allcreatures.org, calling for the city to crack down on what they call cruelty. One line in the petition particularly stands out because of a certain urban legend about a chicken: “Animals are ferried into restaurants, buses, rapid transit trains, and shared dwellings – often kept alive to be “fresh-killed” prior to meal preparation.” Is it torture to take a chicken on a train? If you’re riding the N Judah, we say yes.
