After spending time working with New Holland Brewery to devise a biere de garde for their August 23 beer dinner, the team at The Publican had just one task left: coming up with a name. Chicagoist talked to Publican beer director Mike McAvena, who said that the name — Van Garde — cropped up when Paul Kahan and New Holland’s Fred Bueltmann “picked back up on their mutual musical interests and it just sort of came to them once they started discussing record labels.” Dissecting that using our total lack of musical knowledge, we’re guessing it’s a witty combination of legendary blues label Vanguard Records, and the traditional fencing announcement. Or something. [Chicagoist]
