This year’s Best of the Bay issue of the San Francisco Guardian contains no head-slapingly off-the-mark readers’ choices. In fact, some of them are darned savvy. Delfina won for best Italian (natch), while Broken Record took the prize for best overall bar. And as silly as they can sometimes be, we kind of liked seeing Cafe Gratitude take the place of Herbivore in the category of best vegan restaurant.
Meanwhile, the editor’s choice section, which often dishes out back-handed “awards” twisted itself all up in knots by suggesting Heaven’s Dog as the “best place not to order a cocktail.” It’s tricky, see, because they don’t mean you shouldn’t drink there; they mean you should refrain from ordering and just let the bartender choose for you. Boy, you sure have to read those blurbs closely.
