Late-blight fungus — the same growth that caused the Irish potato famine — is attacking tomatoes all down the East Coast. Half of the tomato crop at Dan Barber’s Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture is lost. An organic farmer in Long Island is considering destroying 800 plants to prevent the blight from spreading, which it does quickly and across species (watch out, potatoes!). Expect the price of tomatoes to spike.
