Get on your Food Is Scary hat: Scientific American posits that tapeworms are on the rise — using as anecdotal evidence the case of the be-tapewormed Anthony Franz who claims he swallowed his unfriendly parasite while eating at Shaw’s Crab House. Whether or not Franz’s allegation of Shaw’s responsibility holds water, SciAm notes that there has been a rise in reports of city folk playing host to Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense, a tapeworm found in salmon, and therefore salmon sushi and tartare — a hospital in Japan reported 14 cases in 2008, as opposed to just 3 in 2000, while a previous rate of zero cases in North America has increased since 2006 to whatever number SciAm means when they say cases have been “popping up.” [SciAm, via Food Chain]
