A very enthusiastic reader responded to yesterday’s item about frozen yogurt mega-chain Red Mango’s first Boston store.

Red Mango is an amazzzzzing product. I grew up in LA and moved here to Boston. There is no big name fro yo business anywhere here. I went to berryline but the place is no Red Mango. I cannot wait till this store opens

Michelle’s comment got us wondering: will Bostonians (especially those with prior knowledge of Red Mango) switch their allegiance when Red Mango arrives on the scene? If you look at the map above, Boston’s frozen yogurt options at first seem to be relatively well-spaced. But look closer: though Cambridge is clearly the domain of BerryLine and boYO owns the Beacon Hill/MGH region, Red Mango, Chill, and Yo! Berry could be locked in competition for customers. Red Mango is unquestionably the closest FroYo shop to Northeastern’s campus, but many of the university’s students live in Cleveland Circle or Allston and could start getting their frozen fix near campus instead of at home. For the non-student population, switching allegiances is feasible, certainly, but not without its difficulties. Will it be worth it to you? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
