Are Doc’s Smoothies Organic or What?

Organic Nation’s Mark and Dorothee swung by Doc’s Juice and Smoothies the other day to pick up a delicious, refreshing organic beverage. Having a momentary pang of doubt, Dorothee double-checked with the counterperson about her $7 smoothie’s organic credentials. Turns out it had absolutely none: when asked if the drinks were organic, the Doc’s employee replied “No, but they’re all-natural.” Cue the double-take: Doc’s website is www.docsorganic.com, and their webpage devotes plenty of pixels to extolling the organicness of their products: “Doc’s Organic smoothies are made using 100% organic fruits, veggies, and juices.” What’s the deal? Is this a case of “greenwashing” — passing something off as more environmentally friendly than it really is? We’re inclined to be generous, and go with Dorothee and Mark’s hypothesis: “My best guess is that in a previous incarnation, Doc’s actually was 100-percent organic, and that the new management just hasn’t taken down the old website.” We called Doc’s to check up on it, but all listed phone numbers deliver an out-of-service message.
