The Other Critics: Aki Appeals; Michael’s Is Comfort

• Adam Erace goes to Aki, which took over what used to be Aoi. Unlike all of its predecessors (nondescript sushi spots) he finds the interior stylish and practically lavish but “you rarely get the feeling you’re footing the bill for its interior decorator.” As for the food, “though Aki should stock some more exotic species, pristine, expertly sliced basics like tuna, striper and salmon draped over well-seasoned sticky rice satisfied just fine.” [Philadelphia Weekly]

• At Michael’s Cafe on East Passyunk, “the fare is straightforward comfort food, and the vibe matches the menu,” and though some of it is too “old-fashioned” for Trey Popp, overall, he recommends it if “comfort’s what you’re after, Michael’s is well worth a try.” [City Paper]
