New Restaurants Noisier Than Ever

Nearly half the restaurants in the Chronicle’s database are too loud to talk in normal voices and they don’t seem to be getting any quieter, according to Michael Bauer’s blog yesterday. In addition to an analysis by a reader of the Chron’s own noise ratings, Bauer noted that many restaurants opening these days, including the The Tipsy Pig, San Anselmo’s Marinitas, and Oakland’s Adesso, hit the 90-or-above decibel level. Since it seems the trend is to the loud, we got to wondering what a noise-sensitive diner might do to alleviate the racket if he or she was set on visiting some of these places. We asked Bauer for some tips, and he very common sensically suggested, “tables in corners are quieter than those in the middle of the room. It’s always best to go a non-prime times, which means early or late.” You could also wear ear-plugs, but then you’d have to text your date all evening, and that’s just too much. [Via SF Gate]
