Metreon Farmers’ Market Opens Today

The new farmers’ market opening today at the Metreon sure is ambitious — it’s open all day every day inside the glass-and-steel complex at Fourth and Mission streets — but the Metreon has been anything but successful, overall. We have to wonder how a venture like this, which depends on casual walk-ins as much as regulars, will fare when surrounded by a building nobody wants to enter. The Island Earth Farmers’ Market, though, is one of the steps Metreon’s owners are taking to draw people into the ignored interior space adjacent to Yerba Buena. In fact, they’re pinning a lot of hope to the city’s appetite. An outpost of New York’s Tavern on the Green is slated for the complex’s top floor. But unless they can get folks in the door, this Earth Island market is going to feel more like Forbidden Planet. [SF Chronicle]
