Putting The (Shad) Fish Back In Fishtown

This weekend is so shad’s moment in Fishtown, which basically owes its existence to the humble fish. Over-fishing and pollution both contributed to the near disappearance of shad in the Delaware. At this point, commercially sold shad is from the West Coast, but that’s not stopping the Fishtown Area Business Association from hosting their first Fishtown Shad Fest in Penn Treaty Park on Saturday.

Historically, late April is when the shad would spawn (it’s just a lucky coincidence that it’ll be in the 80s this weekend), which is how the date was chosen. The best part: from 11am-5pm, Penn Treaty Park will be lined with food stands from Fishtown restaurants, like Standard Tap and Johnny Brenda’s. They’ll be serving festival-themed foods, like shad fish sandwiches and other local specialties.
