You’re more likely to pick the least-healthy option on a fast-food menu if you see an angelic choice like a salad also offered on the menu, according to a study by the Journal of Consumer Research. An author of the paper tells the Times: “When you consider the healthy option, you say, well, I could have that option,” and “[t]hat lowers your guard, leading to self-indulgent behavior.” There’s no word on whether spotting calorie counts has a similarly twisted effect on ordering.
