Whoopie for Whoopie Pies

Today’s New York Times dining section contains a love letter to Whoopie Pies. These cakelike cookie-esque bakery inscrutables, sandwiched around a creamy filling, were a staple of many a childhood, and can incite their fans to extraordinary frenzy. Screw cupcakes — Whoopie Pies are the dessert to watch.

The article pays particular attention to Kim’s Kitchen, the Evanston bakery where whoopie pies (both chocolate and pumpkin flavor) are stock in trade. Ownder Susan Friedman says “If we took them away after it stopped being fall, there would be a riot outside.”

Other great spots to get the confection? They’re great at Sweet Mandy B’s, and they’re as essential to the menu at Jerry’s Sandwiches as the sandwiches. Also check out Flourish Bakery Cafe, Angel Food Bakery, and Fox & Obel Cafe.
