Temporary Closings

As if things weren’t bad enough for old Coney Island, a Saturday morning blaze has indefinitely shuttered Totonno’s, the 85-year-old Lombardi’s spinoff. Owner Louise “Cookie” Ciminieri tells the Times she plans to rebuild: “It’s pretty bad. It’s a lot of damage. I have to redo the oven, because the water got into the bricks. We’re going to fix that, rebrick it … I promise you, it’ll be the same exact pizza.” The fire may have had something to do with the storage of coals in a fire box. Rob and Robin’s words now seem prescient: “Every self-respecting pizza-loving New Yorker should visit the Coney Island original at least once in his lifetime. Go soon before they run out of dough permanently.”
