New Frozen Yogurt Spot Coming To Town

Earlier this morning, Foobooz brought word of Yogorino, a soon-to-open frozen yogurt spot in the former Sushi on the Square space. Though the logo indicates some kind of Italian provenance, Yogorino appears to be Japanese froyo: the same kind currently available here in Philly at Phileo and made famous by Pinkberry/Red Mango.

Nothing against Yogorino (seriously! Best of luck, Yogorino!), but this seems like a terrible time to open a frozen yogurt parlor. For one thing, it’s February, which is hardly the time to hawk anything cold. Even more than questions of seasonality, anecdotal evidence in New York suggests that the boundless appetite for Pinkberry-style frozen might be on the wane — that, or the economy is too bleak to keep such a fad food afloat.

Granted, New York is filled with Pinkberrys, Red Mangos, and their copycats, while Philly only has Phileo, but we’ve heard from friends that many of the smaller froyo places have been shuttering. Meanwhile, a couple hours after the Yogorino news, we saw an item on Serious Eats, which posed the query very plainly: “will the economydestroy frozen yogurt?” More than rhetorical, the question was raised because of the recently announced closing of “Yorganic” (one of the aforementioned copycats).
