Food Fight: Bill Niman Vs. Niman Ranch

Niman’s products show up in restaurants and home kitchens. Trader Joe’s carries these bacon-wrapped pork chops.

After Bill Niman revealed that he’s boycotting his former company, gourmet meat outfit Niman Ranch, in the San Francisco Chronicle this weekend, MP: San Francisco wondered what would become of the city’s restaurants that serve Niman Ranch products. Would restaurateurs take sides in what seems poised to escalate into a foodie war? A quick search reveals that sixteen Boston restaurants namecheck Niman Ranch on their menus, including Henrietta’s Table, Persephone, and every branch of Legal Sea Foods: all restaurants noted for their embrace of sustainable foods and all places that might not be interested in going against Bill Niman, an Alice Waters caliber star in that movement. Our prediction: at least a few of those sixteen restaurants might be dropping Niman Ranch like a hot steak.
