Right Round Like A Record, Baby

Once upon a time we happened to be a free-spirited college girl on her first day studying abroad in Tokyo. We spoke Japanese okay, but we were too arrogant to write down the address of our dorm. After getting disconnected from friends in the major shopping district, we knew our language skills couldn’t help us remember exactly where we were living. With no street signs in Tokyo, and no address to tell cab drivers, we hopped on the subway and rode to what we thought was our destination. It was not. So we walked a little more, and found a fire station. When they didn’t know what to do with us, the friendly Japanese police drove us around the entire city, through the luxury shops in Ginza to the flashing lights of Shinjuku nightlife. We got the ultimate tour of one of the world’s most visually stimulating cities courtesy of the Japanese police. There were restaurants that looked like shacks all the way to five star resorts. What were these little plates of sushi, rolling around on a conveyer belt? We learned it’s called kaiten sushi. Each plate has a piece of sushi, and your bill is calculated by how many plates you consume.

Here in Boston there’s a plethora of sushi restaurants, but so far we’ve only been able to find one that serves kaiten sushi: Fugakyu, located past Coolidge Corner in Brookline, offers special nights during the week when the conveyor belt method is an option. Known as one of the best Japanese restaurants in the city, Fugakyu’s kaiten sushi offers a chance for diners to determine exactly how much money they want to spend based on how hungry they are. Starving yourself? Go for one plate. Ready to really dine? Have fifteen. Kaiten sushi spins right round like a record, baby, so you never have to miss a course.
