One of the city’s oldest bar spaces kind of went to waste when it operated as Grand Saloon. But now Eamonn Dolan, a longtime bartender at the Half King, has reopened it as the Globe with his brother J.P., who’s a drinkslinger from Swift, and with another sibling duo from Ireland. Dolan tells us he was attracted to the space’s history — he says it was used as one of the city’s first brothels after it was built in 1840, and began operating as a bar sometime around 1880. To restore it to its former glory, Dolan & Co. cleaned up the copper façade and exposed the interior brickwork, uncovering a couple of stained-glass windows and an antique mirror in the process. Then he brought in globe lamps and a salvaged back bar from Pennsylvania. By next winter, the fireplace will be back in working order, and in the next month, there will be old-fashioned cocktails, additional beers (there are currently six on tap), plus lunch, brunch, and dinner menus featuring “good pub food.” Baruch students and workers of the Flatiron district, rejoice.
