A French bistro on a corner in the South End. Surely you think, more fusion? More chefs who think a year in Paris means they know a mussel from frites and confit? Do you really need to sample yet another South End specialty restaurant that also has brunch?
In fact, you do. Gaslight may be another cafe on a list of many to try, but during the holidays, we get to feeling festive and eat out with gusto. We want to be impressed by hot soups, an inventive wine list, and foods labeled “nicoise.” Usually, they’re right on the money, and Gaslight is among the winners this season.
Onion soups can be watery, cheese-heavy, and bitter, but start with a bowl here and change your mind for good. The garlic soup is equally amazing, and sharing escargot and bowls of bisque on a blustery day can make many a holiday frenzy melt away. For dinner, come by to sample the salmon or veal. The daily specials are always a treat, and the friendly service is consistently efficient. When you start to add up the list of awards this cafe has garnered, you realize why. And yes, there’s a prix fixe brunch that is completely worth hauling your hungover self to the table. Veggie omelets and a Croque Monsieur should happily feed any gaggle of shoppers or a couple trying to escape the madness. Less than three weeks, folks! At least you’ll be well-fed in the meantime.
