Google Zeitgeist 2008 Out Today!

What does this have to do with food, you ask? Is this about anything more than being a complete effing dork about things on the internet, cultural zeitgeists, and most things that Google does? Friends, there is no denying that all of the above factor into our interest in Google Zeitgeist 2008, but as far as this blog goes, there is also more sound rationale for mentioning it.

See, in this writer’s opinion, one of the neatest things about Google is their Trends feature, which is little more than a list of what people have been searching for, but is so cool because it feels like an up close and personal look into our collective mind-grapes. Zeitgeist is like that too, but for the whole year, and in a slick package.

Anyway! The real point is this: the “Trendsetters” section, which is where Google notes “some emerging trends based on searches, including the rise of comfort foods and do-it-yourself projects (mix your own drinks!). All of these searches had the largest volume on Google.com in the U.S.” Out of four trendsetter lists, one is for cocktails, and the other is comfort foods. (We told you we were going somewhere with this!) So what are these much-hyped trendsetters?

Cocktails
1. martini
2. mojito
3. margarita
4. manhattan
5. cosmopolitan
6. sangria
7. bellini
8. mai tai
9. white russian
10. bloody mary

Comfort Foods
1. ice cream
2. chili
3. spaghetti
4. meatloaf
5. fried chicken
6. chicken soup
7. apple pie
8. pot pie
9. potato salad
10. macaroni and cheese

The list of comfort foods — and, we would argue, the fact the “comfort foods” as a category are a trendsetting search — certainly lends credence to all the talk of comfort foods being a huge food trend for 2009.
