Cheap Eats Disgruntle Times Readers

As we move into the well-intentioned weeks of early January, it’s time to plan to do things like save money and eat better before it all falls apart in the fragile days of February. The Times’ Well blog highlights a list of twenty healthy foods that cost less than a buck (via the Divine Caroline advice site). Predictable picks: eggs, oats, potatoes. Sort of surprising: kale, wild rice, sardines. More fun: reading the comments by prickly Times readers, who go after the writer for using the word “veggies,” tout the list as a blueprint for veganism (sort of), and bemoan the absence of substitutes in case of allergens. Not even a slow news week can stifle the irritated voice of the people.
