Pantone, the color matching behemoth by which all our designer friends live and breathe, has announced their Color Of The Year for 2009: Mimosa:
“The color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Mimosa also speaks to enlightenment, as it is a hue that sparks imagination and innovation.”
The color also “speaks to” one of our favorite hairs of the dog, to which it lends its name: fresh-squeezed orange juice mixed with champagne or other sparkling wine. Ideally, it should be consumed between 11am and 1pm on a Sunday, accompanied by black coffee, pancakes, and bacon, and consumed while the wearer is clad in soft clothes, oversized sunglasses, and last night’s eyeliner.
If you’d like to consume mimosas in a more pulled-together setting, you can’t do wrong by the brunch classics: Tweet makes a classic fresh-squeezed one, Roy’s delivers an unlimited bounty of the fizzy orange beverage as part of their three-course $36.95 brunch prix-fixe, and — if you’re just getting started on your mimosa journey, and want to try all the varieties out there — we highly, highly recommend the mimosa flights at Bin Wine Café. We have been known, on occasion, to indulge in more than one flight at a sitting.
We haven’t tried the mimosas at Green Zebra, but if it’s anything like the rest of the menu, it’ll be fresh and make you feel sort of superior to everyone else after you drink it. If you’re feeling splurgey (and want entertainment provided so you don’t have to make conversation), complimentary mimosas accompany the all-you-can-eat buffet at House of Blues’s Gospel Brunch. And if mimosas aren’t really your thing (we’re horrified by the notion of anyone being averse to fresh orange juice, but we’re willing to entertain the possibility), but want to honor its coronation as the 2009 Color of the Year by downing some of its sibling breakfast-alcohols, Lula Cafe offers up some unbelievably delicious ways to get drunk before noon in a socially acceptable way.
