More Than Hangover Food

Jamaica Plain is packed with brunch spots to cure the worst hangover you can imagine. That said, did we really need one more? Our skepticism was quickly countered the first time this autumn that the college kids, back from their summers home, were adding to the usual motley crowd outside Centre Street Cafe. With nothing but a little hope left that we too could eat like starved JP artists or well-off undergrads, we headed down to give Vee Vee a serious shot at becoming a new favorite.

And could we have been more wrong about the potential for this tiny cafe? Hardly. Vee Vee has assembled a unique menu in a neighborhood crammed with brunch aficionados. Eggs with black beans and plantains mix the best Latin flavor with traditional American breakfast, and lobster sausage feels decadent but remains less filling than one would predict. Our adventurous pick is the daily frittata special with a sake Bloody Mary.

Their dinner items are a wonderful assemblage of seasonal fish and veggies, making the double V a particular treat for a vegetarian/pescatarian duo. Appetizers of roasted beets and butternut risotto top out at $8, and meals are priced comfortably under $20. Wines from around the globe are perfectly matched with any number of dinner selections, but save room for banana cream pie. In an Oreo crust, it might be the new dessert to beat on Centre Street.
